Tougher laws are to be introduced next year to combat use of mobile phones whilst driving. Currently, on conviction one would receive three penalty points on one’s licence and a £100 fine. This will now be doubled to six penalty points and a £200 fine. Significantly, for a new driver having passed their driving test anytime in the previous two years, this will also lead to an immediate ban and return to a provisional licence !

Using a mobile phone is now one of the most common driving distractions (up to one third of all drivers admit to having used a mobile phone whilst driving) and frequently leads to serious injury or death on the roads. Following a road traffic collision, police now routinely check mobile phone records to establish whether this is a contributory factor !
