Our half day towing awareness courses are ideal for new caravanners and the leisure market and the cost is currently £150. We cover reverse manoeuvring, safe hitching and un-hitching, driving with a trailer and we also cover the legal requirements.

Do you need to tow a trailer, caravan, horse box or boat trailer ? If you do you should be aware of the following :

Car licences obtained on or after 1 January 1997:

If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you’re limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass towing a trailer up to 750kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn’t exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. You will need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weight limits.

Car licences obtained before 1 January 1997:

If you passed a car test before 1 January 1997 you keep your existing entitlement to tow trailers until your licence expires. This means you’re generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorised mass (MAM).

Failure to comply with the above could result in points on your licence and fines – your insurance company would also decline to honour any claims incurred whilst towing!

If in doubt …

We also offer more structured training leading to the official B+E driving test set by the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency.  Courses start from £525 for a six hour training package (this is inclusive of test fee and full use of our 4×4 tow car and twin axle box trailer which are fully test compliant)
